Daffodil Bulbs

Daffodil bulbs are among the most popular for fall planting, and after the paleness of winter they will give you a beautiful burst of early garden color. Landscape professionals and serious residential gardeners love daffodils because they are great naturalizers, and as such are a real investment in your landscape or garden. If you allow them to naturalize you should give your daffodil bulbs a little bulb food in the early spring, as well.

Tips for Planting Daffodil Bulbs

Daffodil bulbs should be planted in sunny, well-drained flower beds. To get the most out of your bulbs, they should be planted in a location where they get sun for at least half of the day. That means a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of sun a day. in southern climates a little less. If you find that your daffodils have "gone blind" after some number of years, this means that they may not be getting enough sun or they have not been planted deeply enough. If your bulbs are not planted to a depth of six to seven inches, they are probably not getting enough water from the soil. Also, do not overcrowd the bulbs. With large daffodil bulb varieties four per square foot is a reasonable number to plant. Among miniature varieties six to eight per square foot is good.

Miniature daffodils have become much more popular in recent years, and are a charming addition to many gardens. They are also delightful if you have a large property and want to tie together landscape elements with flowers in planters spaced around the grounds. Like our large daffodils, they are hardy and deer resistant, so they are a sound investment, as well as a beautiful one.
