Our Roots... Are Bulbs

Schipper & Company started in the Netherlands in 1912, when telephones were uncommon, radios were used only for ship-to-shore communication, and the television had not warmed a single living room with its glow.

Cornelis Schipper brought his company to the United States after World War II and took Dutch bulbs from customer to customer in his business coupe. COLORBLENDS, part of Schipper & Company, is still family owned, run by a third-generation flowerbulb merchant who drives a minivan. We still sell bulbs to some of the same customers Cornelis visited 50 years ago, but now we use a catalog and this website. The name COLORBLENDS reflects our goal of making beautiful spring displays easy and rewarding for our customers. We deliver wholesale, supplying professionals, estates, universities, golf courses, corporations, private growers and ambitious amateurs.

The Schipper team (pictured above circa 1935) were from left to right, Dirk Schipper, Cees van Zwaag, Jan Manshanden, Paul Buysman and Nicolaas Schipper. Before any mechanized harvesting, the bulbs were planted and harvested by hand. The beds were 1 meter wide and 14 meters long. One such bed was called a "roe." There would then be 700 "roe" per hectare (2.471 acres) of land.

    Combining tulips has to be done with care. Knowledge about time of bloom and differences in heights and shapes is crucial. Finding the right combinations is a time-consuming process of trial and error. Only Colorblends offers bulbs that are blended and timed to bloom simultaneously, so you don't waste your time and money trying to figure things out.
